The CMR Convention (Convention on the Contract for the International Carriage of Goods by Road) adopted in 1956 under the authority of the UN is intended to regulate relations in the process of carriage of goods by road. It does not apply to mail carrying and transportation of furniture (when moving). The list of countries participating in the convention currently includes 55 states.
Convention on Road Carriage (CMR)
The Road Transport Convention (CMR) provides several specific rules and applies in the following cases:
- when transportation services are provided for a fee
- when the place of departure and destination of cargo are in different states
- when the place of departure and destination of cargo are located on the territory of the CMR Convention member state
Convention on Road Carriage of Goods (CMR ) Terms of Cooperation
The Convention on the Road Carriage of Goods (CMR) provides the most convenient transport link between countries and determines the responsibility of the shipper to the consignee in the following situations:
- when incorrect or inaccurate information about the delivery date and destination is provided
- when defects occur when the goods are packed (if there are no relevant entries in the waybill about it)
- when there are no documents or information necessary for customs clearance or other formalities
The Convention on the Contract for the International Carriage of Goods by Road (CMR) provides for the obligatory availability of three copies of the waybill: one for the sender, on for the carrier and one attached to the goods.
CMR Convention Features and Advantages
The CMR International Convention has the highest legal force in road transportation. Where CMR applies, the waybill acts as evidence of the contractual relationship between the customer and the shipper.
The provisions of the CMR not only relate to the area of registration and acceptance of cargo for transportation but also resolve issues of liability, delivery terms, lawsuits and mutual claims of both parties. Compliance with the CMR Convention ensures fast, intact and safe delivery of goods and prevents goods in poor condition from being transported by road.
